Review of the film "We" (2019)

Jordan Paul became famous as one of the few directors who skillfully balance between the creation of high-quality content and the unobtrusive promotion of tolerant motives. He started his career as a parodist in the show "Mad TV", after which he starred in several comedy projects. Therefore, his debut film in the horror genre came as a surprise to the public. The Trap, with a budget of $4,500,000, grossed 250,000,000 at the box office. The film delighted critics, won an Oscar for best original screenplay and ousted one of his most difficult works from the main role. Everyone immediately started talking about the "rebirth of the genre." Paul became the producer of another successful project "Black Clansman". Therefore, Jordan's fans hoped that the director's new film "We" would come out at least as good as its predecessors.

Spoiler alert. Adelaide (Lupita Nyong'o) and Gabe (Winston Duke) Wilson and his children went on vacation with friends on the coast of California. The day would have been wonderful if their son Jason hadn't wandered into a wonderful amusement park, which seemed painfully familiar to Adelaide. Despite this, the family returned to their house in high spirits in the evening. However, suddenly, in the middle of the night, strangers dressed in red lined up near their house, symbolically holding hands. If you look closely at their faces, you will find out the terrible truth: these are fiercely angry copies of the Wilsons. They will stop at nothing on the way to their destination.

"The Trap" was not one hundred percent horror. It contained some elements of the genre, and in general tended to the direction close to Jordan Peele - satire. Whereas "We" really looks like a full-fledged representative with more or less obvious subtext. That is why critics highly appreciate Peel's projects. Modern horrors have lost any message or meaning in favor of trends. In terms of "musical pumping", editing and camerawork, the film "We" often demonstrates a standard approach for the sake of exceptional angles, from which it becomes creepy. At the same time, the tape manages to rethink the techniques of the most famous horror films in its own way and give out quite interesting moments.

Unlike the monolithic "Trap", the "We" tape looks messy due to the presence of many central characters and various events. The director seems to be deliberately delaying the meaningless moments at the chosen high pace of the narrative, and he does not disclose the necessary details. Therefore, the tape does not manage to catch the viewer's attention and hold it until the very end.

Child actors coped well with their task, given that their images do not require much effort. Among adults, Lupita Nyong'o should be singled out, which the director managed to reveal from a new side. Recently, the actress interacted with the black cast only in mainstream cinema, which inappropriately and stereotypically revealed racial conflicts. In the film "We" Lupita demonstrates a strong and exciting performance, playing two opposite versions of the same personality. The screenwriter tried to reveal her heroine. However, Gabe Wilson turned out to be a caricature fool. By the way, the performer of this role Winston Duke also starred in "Black Panther". It seems that the Marvel studio has formed a canonical group of African Americans, which directors should definitely take. The rest of Adelaide's loved ones remained extras in the background.

Jordan Paul confidently exploits the classic reflection: the most terrible thing is inside us. To scare a person, you don't need any monsters or ghosts from the otherworldly. It is enough to expose the essence and expose all the nastiness outside. We are afraid of the unknown until it comes by itself. However, the realization that the beast, the provocateur of hatred, is always glowing inside or right under us is a real nightmare.

The Saw ribbon is fluttering with many references to all cultural layers, it is saturated with deep symbolism. Poem 11 of chapter 11 of the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, the action "Hands Across America", an analogy in the name of Us with US. It is noteworthy that the history of the Wilson problems dates back to the 80s. An attentive viewer will be interested in putting together all the puzzles with quotes, slogans, riddles, scandals, urban legends and allusions to form a full-fledged picture. The scope of social criticism has gone beyond the problems of the black population to the level of the whole country. Milky Wins gives its players a choice of two options.
