Shooting small insects #001

Small apertures and tiny insects would be unthinkable when shooting with the brightest sunlight. And small aperture openings are not only a large depth of field, but also the ability to shoot with large magnifications. And so, slowly and fearfully, I began to move closer to the work with which photographing insects began for me — to shoot leucopis and other very small flies. On a sloping dry lawn, on sparse blades of grass, I met small gray flies. They had broad heads with a jet-black stripe across their foreheads and a chain of black spots on their bellies—just like the portholes on a ship. These were the parochthylls— the closest relatives of the Leucopis. Having got my hands full on mantises, wasps and large flies, I decided to take up the parochyphil. In the calm, the blades of grass were motionless — you could put the device on a tripod and aim it absolutely accurately. And the internal reflections that annoyed me last year have now disappeared, because I pasted black velvet over the inner surfaces of the transition rings. But it turned out to be not so easy to remove the steam filter. And not at all because they were careful, on the contrary, like all small insects, they did not pay much attention to me. They just met on this lawn too rarely. And there was nothing to lure them with—I didn't know what they ate. Of course, it was possible to cheat: all flies like sweets, and if I smeared the blades of grass with honey or just sweet water, then the parochthylls would probably be interested in this delicacy. Only there wouldn't be a penny of truth in such a picture. But if you can't lure flies, then why not collect them? And I started working as a net. Half an hour later, I had a hundred parochyphils in my test tube. I went back to the camera and opened it right in front of the lens. The flies flew out in a cloud of silvery mist and dispersed. Didn't it work out? But now a small gray line came out on a dry straw, and another one on a neighboring green leaf.

Everyone furiously cleanses and preens themselves after an unpleasant adventure and does not pay any attention to me. And I'm taking them closer and bigger. Now I'm looking at the negatives taken that warm evening and trying to figure out what magnification I shot with. On the negative, the length of the fly is about a centimeter, and its real size is no more than four millimeters. So the magnification is two and a half times, and I used twelve and a half centimeters of extension rings. The flash, held almost close to the insect, allowed the lens to be diaphragmed to the very last mark. And here it is, a fly: right down to the last bristle it turned out to be sharp, and a blade of grass with rough hairs came out so clearly. But when I was printing this negative, I saw for the first time what else is wrong with the flash. I was shooting on a clear sunny evening, and it's night in the picture, the background is black, and the fly is snatched out of the darkness by a beam of light of almost searchlight strength and contrast.
